U.S. imposes fresh sanctions on firms aiding Iran-backed militias in the Middle East
The United States announced new sanctions targeting companies and individuals in Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey that support Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies.
On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury announced a wave of sanctions against firms and individuals operating in Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey that it says assist Hezbollah and other Iran-aligned groups. The action expands the "Operation Economic Outcast" strategy, first unveiled on August 24, aimed at cutting the financial lifelines Tehran uses for missile programs, cyber attacks and backing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Office of Foreign Assets Control listed entities tied to Kata’ib Hezbollah, an Iraqi Shia militia under IRGC command, and Lebanon’s Hezbollah party.
In a related development, a U.S. citizen consented to a $1.43 million settlement for alleged sanctions breaches. OFAC also issued a bulletin stating it will reject most Iran-related licensing applications, maintaining this stance until Iran alters its behavior in the Gulf and its nuclear pursuits.
