U.S. measles cases hit 30-year high as outbreaks spread across states
CDC data show that measles infections in the United States have surged to the highest level in more than three decades, surpassing last year's record.
The United States is experiencing the most measles cases in over thirty years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By mid-July 2026, the tally had already overtaken the 2025 total, which had previously set a modern record of more than 2,200 confirmed infections. Ongoing clusters in multiple states, notably a West Texas outbreak responsible for two child deaths, threaten the nation's measles elimination status maintained since 2000.
The surge reflects lower vaccination coverage, with kindergarten immunization rates slipping from about 93% in 2021-22 to 92.7% in 2023-24, below the 95% level needed for herd immunity. Most cases involve unvaccinated individuals, and health experts warn that the disease can cause severe lung and brain complications. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya of the National Institutes of Health reiterated that vaccines are safe, effective, and undergo rigorous testing.
