U.S. Navy awards $257 million contract to Lockheed Martin for Mk 48 torpedoes
The U.S. Navy has signed a $257 million deal with Lockheed Martin to produce additional Mk 48 heavyweight torpedoes for itself and allied navies.
The Department of Defense announced that the U.S. Navy will pay Lockheed Martin $257 million for the Mk 48 heavyweight torpedo program. The award covers the fabrication of torpedoes, spare components, engineering assistance, and repair of hardware for the Mk 48 MOD 7 variant, supporting the United States, the Royal Australian Navy and additional partner forces. Production and support activities will be performed at facilities in New York and Massachusetts, with the contract set to run through 2029.
The Mk 48 remains the Navy’s primary weapon for both anti-submarine and anti-surface missions, deployed on all classes of U.S. attack submarines. The procurement is intended to ensure that U.S. and allied fleets retain a credible under-sea strike capability as geopolitical tensions rise.
