U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon flies through Taiwan Strait ahead of Xi's US visit

On Friday, a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon patrol plane flew through the Taiwan Strait, the first publicly disclosed Navy transit of the corridor in months. The flight originated in the East China Sea, moved southwest through international airspace, and continued toward the Bashi Channel, as detailed by the 7th Fleet’s Cmdr. Matthew Comer. Chinese military observers tracked the aircraft, later labeling the mission as close-in reconnaissance with an element of pressure.

U.S. officials framed the sortie as a routine demonstration of the right to navigate international waters and a sign of commitment to a free Indo-Pacific.
