The Trump administration announced that, starting October 1, each white South African entering the United States as a refugee will receive $4,500 in government aid, almost double the $2,425 normally provided to refugees under State Department guidelines. Although the increased sum is technically available to any refugee, officials expect it to apply almost exclusively to white South Africans, who made up more than 99 percent of refugee arrivals in 2026, per the U.S. Refugee Report.

President Trump has long asserted, without evidence, that South Africa is undergoing a “white genocide,” a claim echoed by Elon Musk, who has described South African laws as “racist.” The policy arrives as the White House also imposed a $103,265 fee on H-1B hires and eliminated a 60-day grace period for laid-off visa holders, measures reported. Critics note the contrast between the generous aid for a specific demographic and the harsher treatment of other immigrant groups. The move underscores the administration’s selective immigration stance amid broader debates over refugee policy and skilled-worker visas.
