U.S. officials plan notification and response system for rogue AI models
Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor said the government will create a notification framework and contingency plans to handle rogue AI systems across agencies.
On a recent broadcast, Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management and vice-chair of the AI/SI task force, detailed a federal initiative to develop a notification and action framework for out-of-control AI models. He emphasized encouraging developers like Anthropic and OpenAI to report incidents promptly, after which the government will determine the appropriate agency response, whether it falls under the Department of Transportation or other bodies.
Kupor said the task force will also engage with intelligence agencies and critical-infrastructure sectors—including finance, oil and gas, and energy—to align security protocols. The plan aims to strengthen oversight, increase “teeth” behind corporate activities, and reassure Americans that AI risks are being managed. He noted that establishing clear communication channels and contingency measures is a top priority for the task force.
Why it matters
A coordinated U.S. response to rogue AI could prevent safety threats and build public trust in emerging technologies.
