U.S. Olympic track trials to return to Eugene for compressed six-day schedule
The 2028 U.S. track and field Olympic trials will be held June 17-22 in Eugene, Oregon, using a tighter six-day format and moving several events to spring dates.
The United States will stage its 2028 Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon, from June 17 to June 22, marking the sixth straight edition at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. Unlike past trials that covered two weekends, this edition compresses competition into six consecutive days, with the decathlon, heptathlon and 10,000-meter races slated for separate spring meets at locations still to be determined.
Organizers say the change allows athletes more recovery time before the Olympic Games, which begin July 14. While some competitors expressed worries about the expense of traveling to a metro area of roughly 400,000 residents, USA Track and Field chief executive Max Siegel defended the choice, citing the venue’s history of selecting America’s top athletes and its role in winning 52 athletics gold medals since 2008. The move follows earlier discussions about using Los Angeles venues, including the Coliseum and Drake Stadium, but logistical challenges led to the decision to keep the trials in Eugene.
Why it matters
The venue and schedule affect athlete preparation and logistics for the 2028 Olympic Games.
