U.S. policy pushes for tenfold increase in launch and re-entry capacity by 2030

The White House issued a presidential memorandum on August 20 that revises the National Space Transportation Policy, setting a target of more than 1,000 launches and re-entries each year by 2030—over five times the 2025 total and ten times the 2013 figure. The surge is driven by booming commercial satellite markets and growing governmental interest in in-space infrastructure and on-orbit servicing. SpaceX, the industry’s most active launch provider, has secured a site in Louisiana for a $100-billion spaceport to support its plan for up to a million AI-enabled satellites in polar orbits, a trajectory that existing Texas and Florida sites cannot efficiently serve.

Analysts note that current U.S. spaceports lack sufficient launch pads, fuel storage, and payload processing facilities, and that expanding capacity will require extensive ancillary infrastructure. Policy scholars also highlight the shift toward private-sector operation of launch ranges and question the continued need for NASA-run sites like Kennedy Space Center. International competition from emerging European, New Zealand and Canadian spaceports adds pressure to the U.S. expansion effort.
