U.S. Removes Sanctions on Eritrean Military and Key Trade Entities
The United States lifted sanctions on the Eritrean military, the ruling People's Front for Democracy and Justice, the Red Sea Trading Corporation, and adviser Hagos Ghebrehiwet.
On Friday, the U.S. Treasury announced the termination of sanctions that had targeted Eritrea's armed forces, its long-standing ruling party, and the Red Sea Trading Corporation, which handles most of the country's external commerce. The move also cleared Hagos Ghebrehiwet, a senior economic adviser to President Isaias Afwerki, of sanctions. Officials said the decision reflects Eritrea's growing strategic importance along the Red Sea, opposite Yemen. The sanctions had been in place for years before the recent reversal.
