U.S. Scrambles to Build Layered Defenses Against Incoming Drone Swarms

The United States is accelerating the development of multi-layered systems to shield military bases and critical infrastructure from hostile drone swarms that could be used in a future attack.

U.S. intelligence assesses that adversaries such as China, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan and Russia are refining cheap one-way attack drones that could be deployed in large swarms to strain American missile defenses. Although hobbyist drones are occasionally observed over bases, experts note that few dedicated counter-drone systems exist because many facilities are located in populated areas and full-scale missile interceptors are expensive.

Scholars and officials advocate a layered “Swiss-cheese” strategy that integrates detection radars, optical and acoustic identification, radio-frequency jamming and kinetic interceptors like Bumblebee drones, as well as emerging directed-energy weapons. The Pentagon’s Joint Interagency Task Force 401, under the Domestic Shield initiative, is field-testing these technologies at sites such as Naval Base Kitsap, Whiteman Air Force Base, Grand Forks Air Force Base, Fort Bliss and Fort Huachuca.

Over 350 domestic installations have differing levels of protection, and recent legal actions against a plot to use explosive drones at a White House event highlight the growing threat. While capabilities have improved, gaps remain, and officials stress the need for continued testing to close vulnerabilities before a large-scale swarm attack occurs.
