U.S. Secretary of State Rubio says no near‑term peace deal possible in Russia‑Ukraine war
In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there is currently no realistic chance of a negotiated settlement to the Russia‑Ukraine conflict. He described the war as a strategic stalemate, noting that Russia continues to insist on total control of the Donbas region. Rubio added that breaking such a deadlock normally requires either a diplomatic agreement or a widening of the conflict, but sees neither option emerging soon.
He also warned that recent coordinated drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea raise the risk of further escalation. Washington remains prepared to play a constructive role should a diplomatic opening arise.
