U.S. State Department Declares CCP Responsible for Ongoing Genocide in Xinjiang

After a journalist asked the State Department whether China continues to perpetrate genocide in 2026, a spokesperson replied that the United States has concluded the Chinese Communist Party is committing genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious groups in Xinjiang. The determination echoes former Secretary of State Michael Pompeo’s 2021 statement that the PRC was engaged in ongoing genocide, and it has been reiterated in each of the department’s five annual human-rights reports covering 2020 through 2024.

The 2024 report cited forced abortions, sterilizations, intra-uterine device insertions, and mass detentions of more than one million Uyghurs and Kazakhs as evidence of systematic persecution. The department is still preparing its 2025 human-rights report, slated for release later this year.
