U.S. State Department urges Americans to rethink trips to Israel amid heightened terror risk

The U.S. State Department has updated its travel guidance for Israel, reissuing a Level 3 advisory that urges Americans to think twice before traveling. While the overall advisory rating remains unchanged, the notice stresses that the security situation can deteriorate quickly and that violence may erupt without warning. Specific regions—particularly those within seven miles of the Gaza Strip, 1.5 miles of the Israel-Egypt frontier, and certain routes between Route 85, Route 90 and Route 87—are now under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning due to ongoing armed clashes.

U.S. government staff in Israel are barred from entering these zones, and any further restrictions could be imposed on short notice. The update also permits family members to join these employees, though they must follow the same safety protocols. Travelers who proceed are urged to remain vigilant, steer clear of demonstrations, locate nearby shelters, and secure travel insurance covering evacuation and medical needs.
