U.S. warns travelers of possible detention and exit bans in China

The U.S. State Department has upgraded its China travel advisory, highlighting risks of wrongful detention, electronic surveillance and exit bans that could keep Americans from leaving the country.

The U.S. State Department issued an updated Level 2 advisory for mainland China, citing a serious risk of wrongful detention and restrictions on leaving the country. It warns that ordinary professional, academic or personal activities could be deemed criminal under China's expansive security statutes, and that private communications may be intercepted by Chinese security services. Cases have occurred where Americans were detained or deported for critical messages sent from outside China.

In addition, the advisory details the use of "exit bans" that can prevent departure for years, sometimes extending to relatives, with no clear legal recourse. Travelers are advised to carry only a U.S. passport and a valid Chinese visa, register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, and keep regular contact with family or employers. Travel expert Bobby Laurie recommends limiting electronic devices to essential use and leaving confidential information at home.

Why it matters

American visitors to China could face prolonged detention or be barred from leaving, affecting personal safety and diplomatic relations.
