Uber adds live driver-camera view for parents of teen riders

Uber is piloting a safety tool for accounts used by teenagers that enables a designated guardian to access a real-time video from the driver’s front-facing camera while the teen is in the car. When the feature is active, one outlet receives a notification and can start viewing with a single tap; the teen and driver are both informed that the feed is live. No recordings are kept after the journey unless a safety report is filed, at which point an encrypted copy may be retained for up to 14 days according to Uber’s data-retention policy. The service is being tested in Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland, Rhode Island and El Paso, with plans to expand across the United States in the coming weeks.
