Uber driver charged after fatal hit-and-run in Montgomery County

An Uber driver, Andy Nunez Vasquez, has been arrested on charges including causing a death after he struck pedestrian Ricardo Baptiste on Sept. 6 and fled the scene.

Investigators allege that Andy Nunez Vasquez, an Uber driver from Juniata Park, struck Ricardo Baptiste on West Germantown Pike in East Norriton on Sept. 6. Baptiste, who had just been discharged from Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital, was knocked into oncoming traffic and subsequently run over by a tractor-trailer, leading to his death. Vasquez failed to stop, provide assistance, or contact police, and even canceled another Uber ride he had scheduled.

Surveillance cameras and license-plate readers allowed authorities to locate his Hyundai Sonata and link it to his residence, where they seized the car and obtained search warrants on his phone and Uber account. He was charged with causing death, failure to stop and render aid, among other offenses, released after posting 10% of a $20,000 bail, and is slated for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 2.
