Uber Japan and the city of Fujiyoshida signed an agreement to tackle overtourism problems such as traffic jams and litter near Mt. Fuji.
Uber Japan and the city of Fujiyoshida, located at the foot of Mt. Fuji, concluded a joint accord to address overtourism challenges that have led to traffic congestion, illegal parking and littering. Under the agreement, Uber will create designated pickup points in less congested areas and display messages on its Uber Taxi app encouraging visitors to respect local customs and travel manners. Shiro Yamanaka, general manager of Uber Japan, said the partnership aims to set a precedent for other tourist destinations across Japan.
Fujiyoshida Mayor Shigeru Horiuchi welcomed the deal, noting the city's need for international expertise to manage the surge of foreign tourists. The collaboration represents Uber's first formal partnership with a Japanese municipality and targets a more sustainable tourism model for the region.
