A 19-year-old UC Santa Cruz student died when a car driven by a male companion went over a cliff near Steamer Lane, while the driver escaped with minor injuries.

Alli Renee Singh, 19, was preparing to start her third year at UC Santa Cruz when the car she was in went over the edge of Westcliff Drive near Steamer Lane, a well-known surf spot. The crash occurred around 12:50 a.m., and the Santa Cruz Fire Department dispatched all five of its units along with assistance from Central Fire District, Scotts Valley Fire, and Santa Cruz police. Rescue swimmers attempted to free Singh from the water-filled vehicle, but she died in the accident, while the male driver escaped with only minor injuries.

Singh’s aunt posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, describing her as a smart and loving young woman. UC Santa Cruz police and university spokesperson Scott Hernandez-Jason confirmed the tragedy and said the campus is providing counseling resources to the community.
