UDMR backs Siegfried Mureșan as premier, says only PSD can secure parliamentary majority
UDMR leader Csoma Botond says the Hungarian party supports Siegfried Mureșan’s premiership but a governing majority will require PSD’s backing.
President Nicușor Dan appointed Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister, prompting UDMR to endorse his candidacy alongside PNL and USR. Csoma Botond, head of the UDMR parliamentary group, stated that forming a stable majority will only be feasible with PSD’s support and that the party will not cooperate with extremist factions such as AUR, SOS or POT. Siegfried Mureșan confirmed his acceptance of the nomination on Facebook and began coalition talks.
PSD chief Sorin Grindeanu voiced opposition to the appointment, accusing Mureșan of campaigning abroad, yet called a PSD board meeting to examine the right-wing proposal. Meanwhile, PNL secretary Robert Sighiartău revealed a rotating-government scheme originally suggested by Ilie Bolojan, which envisions a PNL-USR-UDMR cabinet now and a PSD premier taking over around mid-2027, with PSD committing to support one outlet government and refrain from opposition motions.
