UEFA Allows Israel to Wear Black Armbands in Nations League Match vs Ireland

UEFA has approved Israel’s request to don black armbands in memory of the October 7 attacks for their Nations League game against Ireland, mirroring Ireland’s own tribute.

Ahead of the Nations League Group B3 clash in Serbia, UEFA gave Israel the green light to wear black armbands to mark the October 7 2023 attacks, aligning with Ireland’s decision to wear similar armbands for Gaza-conflict victims. The match will take place at the TSC Arena in the small town of Backa Topola, with both teams set to observe the tribute. UEFA’s approval was announced just before the game, adding a symbolic layer to the encounter.

Earlier, two Israeli journalists were excluded from the post-match press conference after making contentious statements during the pre-match briefing. Reports from Gavin Cummiskey and Gavin Cooney highlighted the heightened tension surrounding the fixture.

Why it matters

The dual armband gestures turn a routine football match into a visible reminder of recent regional conflicts.
