UEFA sanctions Serbia with stadium ban and fines for racist fan behavior

UEFA ordered Serbia's next home match to be played behind closed doors and imposed financial penalties on its football federation for racist conduct by supporters in Nations League games against Greece and the Netherlands.

Following incidents of racist and discriminatory conduct by supporters in Serbia's Nations League matches against Greece and the Netherlands, UEFA's Disciplinary Committee imposed a series of sanctions. Serbia must host its next home game without spectators and will pay several fines for breaches including offensive messaging, use of fireworks and fan invasions onto the field. Separate cases saw Kosovo receive a fine and a two-year ticket-sale ban after a loss to Austria, while Croatia and other federations faced comparable penalties for fan misconduct in recent fixtures. The measures aim to deter future violations and uphold UEFA's standards of conduct across European football.

Why it matters

The penalties highlight UEFA's crackdown on racism in football and affect match attendance and finances for national federations.
