Uganda arrests alleged serial killer and cannibal Mujurizi Moses, vows death penalty
Mujurizi Moses, accused of killing and cannibalising 38 people in Uganda, has been captured and faces a public trial and possible execution.
Ugandan authorities have detained Mujurizi Moses, whom police describe as the nation’s "worst serial killer and cannibal," accused of murdering and allegedly eating 38 victims between 2010 and 2025. Investigators say he broke into homes in Masaka, Ibanda and Kazo, slaughtering families with a machete over a 15-year period. After a massive manhunt spanning three regions, senior police officer Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced the arrest, promising a public trial and execution.
The case follows earlier investigations that confused Moses with another suspect, Fred Mujulizi, also known as Kulaish Kamugisha, linked to killings in Greater Masaka. Police had released Moses’s photo in 2013 and noted previous arrests and disputed releases. The latest arrest also brings murder and human-trafficking charges stemming from a September 28 death.
Why it matters
The arrest highlights Uganda's response to a high-profile violent crime spree and raises concerns about public safety and capital punishment.
