Uganda's army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba announces 2031 presidential bid

Uganda's army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced on the X platform that he will stand for the nation's highest office in the 2031 presidential election, promising a victory backed by his father, President Yoweri Museveni. Kainerugaba, 52, leads the Patriotic League of Uganda and has previously been linked to the suppression of dissent during the January polls, including an internet shutdown. He previously hinted at running in the last election but later withdrew.

The ruling National Resistance Movement, headed by Museveni since 1986, faces criticism over alleged human-rights abuses, which the government denies. Main opposition figure Bobi Wine has left Uganda for the United States, citing safety concerns, and former challenger Kizza Besigye remains incarcerated on treason charges. When asked about Museveni's future plans, spokesperson Alan Kasujja said the decision will be made in due time.
