Uganda's former child monarch Oyo Nyimba dies at age 34

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the former king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, died at 34, the news being released by Prime Minister Calvin Rwomiire Akiiki. The monarch had been receiving medical care overseas for an unspecified condition, a fact that surprised many Ugandans who had been told he was alive but critically ill. Crowned at three years old after his father’s death, Oyo became known internationally as the youngest king, drawing visits from figures like Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi.

He governed through appointed regents until reaching adulthood and later kept a low profile, remaining single. The Tooro premier’s statement assured continuity, noting a prince will inherit the throne, with his identity to be announced in line with customary rites. Traditional kingdoms, reinstated in 1993 after a ban, serve as cultural custodians despite lacking political power. The kingdom’s seat lies in a remote western Ugandan town near the Congo border, home to the Batooro people.
