Uganda unveils “Pearl Sweet” name for its future crude oil blend
Ugandan officials announced the new name “Pearl Sweet” for the country’s upcoming crude oil blend, linking it to the nation’s “Pearl of Africa” nickname and its low-sulfur quality.
At a remote oil site in Kikuube, Ugandan authorities introduced “Pearl Sweet” as the brand for the nation’s future crude oil blend, a nod to Winston Churchill’s “Pearl of Africa” description and the blend’s low sulfur content. The Ministry of Energy said the name will aid marketing and buyer engagement. President Yoweri Museveni called the naming a key step toward adding value through refining, petrochemical production and using associated gas for electricity, aiming to reduce reliance on imports.
The oil fields hold roughly 1.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil, with TotalEnergies holding the largest share, CNOOC as a partner, and the Uganda National Oil Company owning 15%. Production is expected to reach about 230,000 barrels per day, with exports from separate CNOOC and TotalEnergies projects. The announcement follows ongoing controversy over a heated pipeline crossing sensitive ecosystems and opposition from climate groups.
