Uganda withdraws from Invictus Games, citing loyalty to King Charles

Uganda’s armed forces chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, declared on social media that the country will withdraw from Prince Harry’s Invictus Games because it lacks the endorsement of King Charles III. In his statement, Kainerugaba said Uganda could not be seen as opposing the monarch, whom he described as deeply revered, and dismissed internal factions supporting the Sussex couple as “Harry-Meghan nonsense.” The withdrawal comes just months after Uganda announced its inclusion as the 26th nation in the Invictus community and prepared to compete in the 2027 Games in Birmingham.

Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka had previously praised the Games and appeared alongside Prince Harry at a Chatham House ceremony. The move underscores ongoing tensions between the British royal family’s public roles and the new guidelines issued by King Charles regarding the Sussexes.
