Ugandan TV journalist poised to assume throne of Tooro Kingdom

A television journalist who also serves as a prince with Uganda Broadcasting Corp is scheduled to assume the throne of the Tooro Kingdom, taking the regnal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo after completing traditional rites. The ceremony will take place in Fort Portal, drawing thousands of spectators and a televised audience. Elders of the Babiito clan selected him from among eligible princes following the August death of King Oyo Nyimba, who died of cancer at age 34 without a publicly known heir.

Queen mother Best Kemigisa disputes the selection, claiming the late king's written will was ignored and that a young son, yet to be revealed, should inherit the throne. The succession controversy has revived memories of Oyo's own childhood coronation in 1995, when he was crowned at age three and became known worldwide as a youthful monarch. Analysts note that, while traditional leaders hold no formal political power, they remain influential cultural figures within Uganda.
