UIDAI unveils new procedures for correcting and changing Aadhaar names
The Unique Identification Authority of India has released an updated SOP that classifies Aadhaar name updates and specifies required documents for each type.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issued a new Standard Operating Procedure for Aadhaar name modifications, effective September 18, superseding the 2021 rules. The SOP categorises updates into minor corrections, marriage or divorce adjustments, data-entry error fixes, and major name changes, each with distinct documentation requirements. Minor edits include spelling corrections, expanding initials, or removing dots, and typically need a valid proof of identity.
Changes due to marriage or divorce require an Annexure D affidavit, while data-entry errors call for Annexure B or C affidavits depending on age. A complete name change is treated as a major alteration and must be supported by a Gazette notification. To process any change, individuals must go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, submit the relevant documents, undergo biometric verification, and pay a ₹75 fee, receiving a URN for tracking.
Why it matters
The new rules clarify how millions of Indians can update their official identity records, affecting access to services tied to Aadhaar.
