UK braces for second named storm of the season this weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning as Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the year, is set to hit northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland over the weekend.

The Met Office announced that Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the year, will impact northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland this weekend with strong winds and heavy rain. The system follows Storm Austen, which brought heavy rain to London from Thursday night into Friday and produced winds up to 48 mph. Boelo is expected to generate gusts of 70-80 mph in exposed coastal locations and 50-60 mph across a wider area, prompting a yellow wind warning for mainland Scotland, the Western Isles, Orkney, the far north of England and Northern Ireland.

The storm is driven by a deep low-pressure area and an active jet stream crossing the Atlantic. Deputy chief forecaster Chris Bulmer highlighted the potential for impactful conditions and advised people to monitor updates as the situation develops.

Why it matters

Severe wind and rain could disrupt travel, cause damage and pose safety risks across northern UK regions.

  1. Oct 20 Storm Austen expected to deliver 50-60mph gusts across southern UK
