UK car insurance averages £713, with notable savings for young drivers

British motorists now face an average car-insurance premium of £713, a slight drop from last year and 17% lower than two years ago.

New research based on more than six million comprehensive car-insurance quotes reveals the UK average premium is now £713, down £22 from the previous year and 17% below the level two years ago. The decline is driven largely by younger drivers, whose average costs fell 13% for 17-year-olds and 11% for 18-year-olds, though the latter still pay the highest rate at £2,083. In contrast, retirees such as 70-year-olds face a 5% rise to £411.

Regional disparities persist, with Inner London costing an average of £1,079 and Northern Ireland seeing a 25% jump to £1,059. Analysts recommend obtaining a fresh quote at least 28 days before renewal, as doing so can shave up to 53% off the price compared with last-minute purchases, and adding named drivers or security devices may further reduce costs.

Why it matters

Understanding current insurance costs helps drivers make informed choices and potentially save money.
