UK expands sanctions to cover Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights
Britain announced new sanctions on Israeli settlements, confirming that those in the occupied Golan Heights and East Jerusalem will be included.
On Tuesday the United Kingdom labeled Israeli settlements as illegal and unveiled a broad sanctions package aimed at curbing trade and services that support them. Government sources confirmed that the regime will cover settlements in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, a plateau seized from Syria in 1967 and never internationally recognized as Israeli territory. Around 20,000 Israeli settlers now reside in the Golan alongside about 26,000 native Druze inhabitants.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced an import ban on goods from these settlements and pledged action against firms and individuals financing construction, infrastructure or real estate for settlement growth. A coalition of twelve nations, including Canada, Denmark and France, issued a joint statement expressing intent to impose or consider comparable trade restrictions. In retaliation, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel would shut the British consulate in East Jerusalem and prohibit eleven British MPs from entering Israel.
