UK faces heightened terror risk amid looming US-Iran conflict and regional tensions

Analysts warn that a renewed US-Iran clash could expose Britain to more terrorist attacks, while Russia and far-right activity add to the threat landscape.

New assessments suggest that a potential resurgence of hostilities between the United States and Iran could increase the likelihood of terrorist incidents on British soil. The analysis points to a convergence of threats, including Russian opposition to the UK's aid to Ukraine, a rise in far-right extremism, and Iranian espionage and proxy operations. In response to escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Andy Burnham approved the deployment of RAF Typhoon jets to defend Saudi cities and infrastructure.

MI5 director Ken McCallum warned that Iran remains a major security concern, noting 50 arrests over Iran-linked activities in the past year and recent police bail of seven suspects after a suspected plot at RAF Fairford. Former FBI Middle East specialist Ali Soufan warned that diplomatic options are dwindling as Iran intensifies attacks on Strait of Hormuz shipping and prepares its regional allies for escalation. The report cautions that simultaneous commitments to NATO, European security and Middle Eastern force protection could stretch the UK's defence readiness.
