UK firms granted rare access to Ukrainian battlefield data for AI drone swarms

The UK Defence Ministry revealed that up to twelve British companies will receive access to real-world combat data from Ukraine to develop artificial-intelligence models for drone swarms. The dataset includes both visual and thermal battlefield imagery, housed in the Avengers AI Labs platform, which until now was only available to Ukraine. Firms are invited to pitch how they will use this "goldmine of battlefield data," with selections expected in a matter of weeks.

The initiative follows a bilateral AI-partnership agreement signed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said it will strengthen UK security and aid Ukraine. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan described the effort as the Prime Minister's AI Taskforce delivering practical collaboration between Ukrainian experience and British AI expertise. Early trials already use the data to create AI-enabled sensors for protecting infrastructure.
