UK government adopts password-free login, saving taxpayers thousands each week
The GOV.UK One Login system now lets users access services with biometric passkeys instead of passwords, cutting weekly text-message costs by about £4,200.
The UK government’s One Login service is transitioning to password-less authentication, using passkeys that rely on biometric data or a device PIN. This follows guidance from the National Cyber Security Centre, which recommends moving away from alphanumeric passwords. Early adopters number more than 300,000, and about one in ten daily logins now employ passkeys.
The shift eliminates the need for SMS verification codes, saving the Treasury around £4,200 each week. Ministers highlighted the benefits of faster access and stronger protection against phishing and credential-stuffing attacks. While passkeys are optional, users are encouraged to enable them wherever available across both government and private-sector accounts.
Why it matters
Password-free login speeds up access to public services and reduces government spending on verification texts.
