UK government partners with Google to display live fuel prices on Maps

The UK government will integrate its Fuel Finder data with Google Maps and Waze, allowing drivers to see near-real-time petrol and diesel prices on their phones.

A partnership between the UK government and Google will make live fuel prices visible on Google Maps and Waze, using data from the official Fuel Finder system. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates the feature could reduce household fuel costs by roughly £40 annually. Energy consumer minister Polly Billington called the initiative a "game-changer" for affordability, and Google’s Sarah-Jayne Williams said it will help drivers manage winter expenses.

The policy follows a requirement introduced in February that stations report price changes within 30 minutes, with the Competition and Markets Authority overseeing compliance. Diesel prices have recently surged to record highs, while global supply disruptions have pressured fuel markets. The announcement arrives ahead of the upcoming budget, where Chancellor John Healey may adjust the planned fuel-duty changes for 2027.

Why it matters

Drivers can now quickly locate the cheapest petrol or diesel, easing household transport costs amid rising fuel prices.
