UK grid operator seeks record 1,200MW emergency power from France
Britain’s National Energy System Operator asked France for up to 1,200 MW of electricity via undersea links after a transmission asset delay reduced network capacity.
On October 12, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) reported that a delay in restoring a National Grid Electricity Transmission asset lowered the UK’s network capability during the afternoon. In response, NESO activated Emergency Assistance tools, first seeking 700 MW of power from France and later adding another 500 MW, amounting to a historic 1,200 MW import request via undersea cables. This request is the biggest recorded since at least 2024.
NESO emphasized that the electricity supply stayed secure throughout the episode and that consumers did not suffer any outages. The operator’s control centre continuously monitors the system and has a suite of measures to address shifting conditions. The move underscores the reliance on cross-border interconnectors for grid stability.
Why it matters
It shows how the UK grid depends on foreign power imports to maintain supply when domestic infrastructure falters.
