UK health officials warn of continued ramipril shortages through October

The UK Department of Health and Social Care has issued a renewed warning that ramipril capsules in several strengths will continue to be in short supply until the end of October 2026. The shortage, labelled tier 2 with medium impact, affects 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg capsules, prompting pharmacists to sometimes limit dispensing to a month's supply. Although ramipril tablets remain on the market, officials caution that a surge in demand for alternative ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers could create further shortages.

Earlier this year, a serious shortage protocol was already in place, and four product recalls were carried out by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency between February and May. Olivier Picard, chair of the National Pharmacy Association, highlighted the need for careful management of substitute medicines. Patients taking ramipril are advised to continue their prescribed regimen and consult healthcare professionals before making any changes.
