UK Home Insurers See Record Surge in Subsidence Claims After Hottest Summer

Insurers report a near-140% rise in subsidence claims for August, the highest on record after the hottest summer.

The United Kingdom’s hottest summer on record has triggered an unprecedented increase in homeowner subsidence claims, with Hastings Direct reporting an almost 140% surge in August compared with the same month last year. The spike follows five heatwaves that followed the warmest spring ever recorded in England and Wales, prompting insurers to field a flood of calls and online queries. The British Geological Survey warns that climate-driven drying of soils puts millions of houses at risk, especially older properties in London, Essex, Kent and along the east-coast stretch from Oxford to the Wash.

Average payouts rose to a record £20,000 between April and June, and total insurer payouts for domestic subsidence reached £72 million, up from £60 million a year earlier. Aviva, which recently acquired Direct Line, and Axa also reported higher claim numbers and expect the trend to persist through October unless sustained rainfall improves soil moisture. Industry experts say the pattern underscores the growing financial exposure of the home-insurance market to climate change.
