UK identifies 236 knife-crime hotspots, pledges CCTV upgrades and extra patrols
Police chiefs have mapped 236 high-risk areas for knife crime across England and Wales, and the Home Secretary announced plans for more CCTV, lighting and patrols.
A national analysis by police chiefs identified 236 one-kilometre-wide hotspots for knife crime in England and Wales, with Greater Manchester, the West Midlands and London accounting for the largest shares. The Home Office will equip each area with enhanced CCTV, brighter lighting, and environmental changes to make weapon hiding harder, while partnering with local authorities, the NHS and support groups to steer youths away from violence.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood highlighted a 23% drop in knife robberies in seven forces since June 2024, equating to about 3,600 fewer incidents. The plan follows a £26.25 million Knife Crime Concentration Fund launched earlier this year. Families of victims, including the mother of a Sheffield teen killed in 2025, praised the targeted approach as a long-awaited response to the epidemic.
