UK imposes 31 fresh sanctions targeting Russia's war financing and human rights abuses

The United Kingdom announced 31 new sanctions aimed at cutting off revenue streams for Russia's war effort and punishing individuals linked to propaganda and torture in Ukraine.

The UK Foreign Office unveiled a package of 31 sanctions designed to undermine the financial foundations of Russia's war machine and hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations in Ukraine. Around 23 individuals and entities will face asset freezes and travel bans, and eight ships linked to a shadow fleet intended to evade existing sanctions will be targeted with trade bans. Specific provisions also sanction seven people for indoctrinating Ukrainian children, including deported youths, and eight others for involvement in arbitrary detention and torture.

Officials said the timing aims to sustain economic pressure on Moscow before the winter months, a period historically marked by intensified attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. The UK emphasized its unwavering support for Ukraine and its resolve to target both revenue sources and perpetrators of atrocities.

Why it matters

The sanctions aim to weaken Russia's ability to fund its war and deter further human rights abuses in Ukraine.
