UK launches AI boot camps to equip unemployed youth with job skills
A pilot programme in north-west England will give up to 70 unemployed 16- to 21-year-olds three weeks of AI training and basic workplace skills, aiming to link them to apprenticeships.
In response to rising youth unemployment, a pilot AI boot camp will be run in north-west England for up to 70 individuals aged 16 to 21 who are not in work or education. The three-week course combines hands-on AI development, insight into how businesses deploy AI, and basic office-skill training such as IT system use and timekeeping. The scheme seeks to place most graduates into apprenticeships with local employers, including defence contractor BAE Systems and food producer Heinz.
Lisa Nandy, the digital, culture, media and sport secretary, said the programme will support young people at a pivotal stage, while AI minister Kanishka Narayan highlighted its role in preparing them for an AI-centric job market. Academic Bouke Klein Teeselink called the idea sound in principle but warned that lasting AI competence requires ongoing learning. The pilot will inform a nationwide AI skills rollout planned for next summer, using tools from Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic.
