UK minister says Britain will keep tightening sanctions despite US stance
A British minister announced that the UK will continue to increase sanctions on Russia, diverging from President Trump's recent easing of measures.
In an interview on a journalist at one outlet Morning programme, a UK minister stressed that Britain must play a vital diplomatic role in keeping NATO aligned behind Ukraine and warned that Russian threats extend beyond Kyiv to the whole alliance and Europe. She declared that the United Kingdom will persist in strengthening sanctions on Russia, a stance that diverges from President Trump's recent decision to relax sanctions on Russian diesel and his refusal to endorse a major sanctions package.
The minister avoided directly criticizing the US president, instead highlighting the importance of collective security for the UK, Europe and NATO. The comments follow a week of heightened tension between the United States and Ukraine, including Trump’s suggestion to replace President Zelensky and reports that US actions may have limited Ukraine’s access to Elon Musk’s Starlink service. Prime Minister Andy Burnham welcomed President Zelensky to Downing Street, reaffirming British support for Kyiv. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continued, with recent strikes killing two civilians and wounding twelve.
Why it matters
The UK's stance signals a split within the NATO alliance over how to pressure Russia, affecting global sanctions policy and Ukraine's support.
