UK organ donation shortfall deepens as opt-out law fails to boost supplies

The NHS announced an unprecedented organ shortage warning, highlighting that 8,700 patients are currently on transplant waiting lists and donor numbers have dropped by almost ten percent since the 2019 opt-out law was introduced. The legislation, intended to increase donations by presuming consent, has not delivered the expected rise in organs, with the number of deaths on the list remaining high. Healthcare staff report that without clear donor registrations, families are left to decide in grief, often leading to refusals.

The rollout coincided with the first COVID-19 lockdown, cancelling a major awareness drive that was meant to inform the public about the new system. Experts also point to structural issues, such as regional allocation limits, that hinder efficient use of the limited donor pool.
