UK regulator bans first ads for oral weight-loss drugs as prescription-only
The Advertising Standards Authority prohibited online ads for oral GLP-1 weight-loss medicines, ruling they promoted unlicensed, prescription-only products.
The Advertising Standards Authority has barred several online pharmacies from advertising oral GLP-1 weight-loss medicines, marking the first such bans for these drugs. Ads from Simple Online Pharmacy and Pharmacy Online encouraged consumers to join waitlists and pre-order the treatments before the first oral tablet received UK prescription-only licensing on June 11. Under MHRA regulations, medicines must be authorised before any promotional claims, and prescription-only products cannot be marketed to the public.
The ASA also ruled against MedExpress, Juniper and Care Pharmacy for promoting prescription-only medicines without naming them, noting the overall impression was still clear. Regulators warned that irresponsible advertising of powerful weight-loss drugs could endanger public health and pledged continued monitoring in partnership with the MHRA and the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Why it matters
Misleading ads for prescription-only weight-loss drugs can expose consumers to unsafe treatments and undermine drug-approval safeguards.
