Households in UK Smoke Control Areas could be fined up to £1,000 if they burn unauthorised fuel in fireplaces this winter.
Residents across the United Kingdom are being reminded that lighting a fireplace with the wrong type of fuel in a Smoke Control Area can result in an immediate fine of up to £1,000. The restriction, rooted in the Clean Air Act 1993 and reinforced by the 2020 Air Quality Domestic Solid Fuels Standards, obliges households to use only fuels on the authorised list or specific smokeless options such as anthracite, gas, or low-volatile steam coal, unless the appliance has Defra approval.
Most UK local authorities have established Smoke Control Areas, meaning the rule covers a large portion of the population. While many newer homes lack fireplaces, older properties and a growing number of younger owners continue to use traditional log or coal burners for extra warmth and to curb energy bills. Authorities stress that unauthorised fuel use is a punishable offence, urging people to check their local regulations before the winter season begins.
