UK retail sales fall as mild weather dampens winter apparel demand

Retail sales volumes in the United Kingdom declined last month, driven by warmer temperatures that reduced demand for autumn and winter clothing.

The latest Office for National Statistics figures reveal that UK retail sales volumes fell last month, a sharper decrease than the 0.1% dip analysts had anticipated. This decline comes after a 0.7% increase in August and a 0.4% decrease in July, both of which were later adjusted upward in the new release. Warmer weather is identified as the main factor curbing consumer interest in autumn and winter apparel.

Despite the monthly drop, the ONS reported a 0.7% rise in overall product purchases for the third quarter of 2026 compared with the previous quarter, driven primarily by motor fuel sales, which have returned to pre-conflict levels despite recent price hikes. Senior statistician Hannah Finselbach highlighted the contrast between the seasonal clothing slowdown and the broader quarterly growth.

Why it matters

The dip signals that seasonal weather can quickly affect consumer spending, influencing retailers and the broader economy.
