UK retailers to start selling plug-in balcony solar kits this week

Starting Thursday, Argos will roll out plug-in balcony solar kits, and other major retailers such as Amazon, Currys, B&Q and Screwfix plan to stock them shortly thereafter. Priced at roughly £400-£500 depending on capacity, the 800-watt systems are designed for balconies, terraces or sheds and feed electricity straight into a home’s wiring without needing a battery. The Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh highlighted the technology as an affordable way for households to lower energy costs, while Argos managing director Graham Biggart said the offering puts more control in customers’ hands.

Savings will vary based on panel orientation, weather and whether appliances are run during sunny periods, and each installation must be logged with the National Energy System Operator. Consumer-group Which? warned that the kits may not suit every property and could require landlord consent or planning permission, and the Energy Saving Trust stressed the need for clear guidance on safety and suitability.
