UK sees surge in XFG Covid cases, prompting debate over mask reinstatement

Covid infections and hospital admissions are climbing sharply in the UK, driven largely by the XFG (Stratus) variant, sparking calls to re-introduce face-mask rules.

Recent UK Health Security Agency data show Covid cases jumping from 1,374 in August to 4,589, while hospital admissions approach 5,000, with the XFG (Stratus) recombinant variant accounting for more than 50 % of hospitalised infections. The XFG strain, part of the Omicron family and prevalent in North America, has been circulating for about a year but is now driving a steep rise in cases across England, Wales and Scotland.

Although the World Health Organization monitors the variant, officials say it does not cause more severe illness than other strains, and overall case levels remain low. The legal requirement for face coverings, lifted in 2022, has largely disappeared, yet the surge has reignited discussion about reinstating mask rules in indoor public spaces. Health experts, including consultant epidemiologist Alex Allen of the UKHSA, stress the importance of getting the autumn Covid and flu vaccines, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and immunocompromised. Recent figures also recorded 28 Covid deaths in England last week, nine more than the previous week.

Why it matters

A sharp Covid surge threatens to overwhelm the NHS and could lead to renewed mask mandates.
