UK soil microplastic buildup threatens food security, experts urge binding cuts

Scientists, MPs and campaigners warn that rising microplastic levels in British soils could jeopardise the nation’s food supply and call for legally enforceable reduction targets.

A new analysis commissioned by the all-party parliamentary group on microplastics reveals that British agricultural soils rank among the most contaminated in Europe, largely because of repeated applications of sewage sludge as fertilizer. Led by MP Alberto Costa and senior author Cressida Bowyer of the Revolution Plastics Institute at the University of Portsmouth, the paper details how micro- and nanoplastic particles—from textiles, packaging, tyres and other everyday items—alter soil water capacity, damage microbial communities and affect earthworms, while also acting as sponges for hazardous chemicals.

The researchers argue that safeguarding soil health is vital as climate-related extremes already strain food production. They propose five policy steps: enforce legally binding reduction targets, regulate the biggest sources of microplastic releases, impose extended producer responsibility, improve wastewater and sludge protections, and create a coordinated national monitoring and evidence system. Co-author Antaya March stresses the need for a unified strategy rather than a fragmented response. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been contacted for comment.
