UK tank programme taps Ukraine combat data to boost Challenger 3 capabilities

British defence officials announced that combat data gathered in Ukraine is shaping the development of the Challenger 3 main battle tank. Presented at a London-area exhibition, the programme highlights a digital overhaul, a smart targeting system adaptable to drone detection, and the replacement of the old rifled gun with a 120mm L55A1 smoothbore that uses NATO ammunition. Protective measures include explosive reactive armor and modular kits that can be fitted with additional drone-defence gear as needed.

The tank forms part of a “20-40-40” layered defence concept, borrowing from Ukrainian experience where inexpensive drones have threatened costly armour. Seven prototypes exist, an eighth is in production, and they have already completed crewed live-fire tests, with deliveries now slated for next year rather than 2025. The upgrades stem from a £1 billion 2021 contract awarded to Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land to modernise roughly 150 Challenger 2s.
